What you will need

  • Cornstarch
  • Water
  • Coffee grounds (optional)

How to make it

Put 1 1/4 cups of cornstarch into a bowl and add 1 cup of water (you may need to add a little more water or starch to get the right consistency). If you want to, you can sprinkle coffee grounds on top to give it a deceptively smooth and dry look, much like real quicksand. Now when you hit it with your fist the quicksand supports your weight, but when you slowy push your finger in, it easily sinks to the bottom.


This makes a mess, so it might be good idea to put newspaper under the bowl.
